Winter Skincare Tips from a Board-Certified Dermatologist

With colder temperatures and extra washing and hand-sanitizing, some of us are already experiencing dry skin that often arrives in the winter months.

Dry skin isn’t merely cosmetic or a slight annoyance. For many, it can be a serious medical problem with itching, flaking, bleeding, pain and discomfort. Here are board-certified dermatologist Dr. Emily Prosise’s top tips for combatting dry winter skin.

  • Choose a cream or an ointment rather than a lotion for maximum effect.
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands to seal existing moisture into your skin. (Carry some in your pocket or purse to re-apply to hands throughout the day.)
  • Use only gentle, unscented skincare products. Avoid deodorant soaps and skincare products that contain alcohol and fragrance.
  • Wear gloves when outdoors.
  • Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air in your home.
  • Stay warm without cozying up to a fireplace or other heat source. Sitting in front of an open flame or other heat source can dry your skin.

If these don’t bring relief, you may want to see a board-certified dermatologist. Very dry skin can require a prescription ointment or cream or could even be related to an underlying medical condition.
